Coach Keith Ramsey

Keith Ramsey – Head Coach

Keith Ramsey takes over the reins of Mira Costa Baseball in his first year with the program. Keith was born and raised in Westchester, California and attended Loyola high school where he starred as both a goalkeeper on the CIF 1998 championship soccer team and was an all league baseball player for the Cubs. After high school, Ramsey attended Los Angeles Harbor College and competed as both a pitcher and outfielder, earning a scholarship to the University of Florida. Ramsey was an All-SEC selection.

After being drafted his junior season by the Cincinnati Reds, he returned to school to play his senior year and earn his degree in English. Following the 2002 season for the Gators, Ramsey was drafted in the 10th round by the Cleveland Indians and played eleven years of professional baseball for five different MLB organizations up to the AAA level.

After his playing career, Ramsey coached for Manhattan Beach Little League and other travel teams. In 2016 he made his high school coaching debut at Crossroads school and doubled the Roadrunners’ win total that season. Following that success, the opportunity to become a Mustang was too hard to pass up. Ramsey took on the role as Varsity Head Coach for the Mira Costa Baseball program. He currently resides in Westchester with his wife Meagan and young son Bodhi.

Warren Trott – Varsity Assistant

Warren Trott returns for his third year as Mira Costa varsity assistant. Native of the South Bay, Trott graduated from West Torrance high school where he was the warrior shortstop earning Daily Breeze all-area honors his junior and senior seasons. He led West Torrance to back to back Bay League championships and advanced to the CIF Semi-Finals each year prompting the Detroit Tigers to select him in the 47th round of the 1998 MLB Draft.

He attended UCLA on a baseball scholarship instead, playing five seasons and was named All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention. In 2003, he left UCLA after earning his bachelors degree in History. Trott works with the infielders and hitters for the Varsity team.

John Colin – Varsity Assistant

John “Turtle” Colin begins his eighth season as Assistant Varsity Coach. He strives to honor the legacy of fun-loving former Mustang captain Henry Pearson, killed by a drunk driver in April, 2009. A Mira Costa graduate, John served as Manager of the Mustangs Baseball and Football teams throughout high school and managed the football team at El Camino College.

Among his other responsibilities, he oversees the Mustang Baseball managers, works with catchers and helps with game scheduling.

Chris Costley – Coach

Chris Costley joins the program in his first year as a high school coach. Chris starred as a shortstop at Chaminade High School moving on to play at both St. Mary’s and Pepperdine University in the West Coast Conference.

Chris brings an array of knowledge for all facets of the game and specializes in infield play. He is a Sergeant Training Officer for the LAPD and is married with two children, both Mustang athletes.

Andre Van Gerwyn – Junior Varsity Head Coach

Andre Van Gerwyn takes over the role as Junior Varsity Head Coach and his first year with the Mustang program. Andre is a well-respected coach in the South Bay working with Bishop Montgomery High School and the Sand Gnats Baseball Club.

Andre played his high school ball at El Segundo and brings a wealth of knowledge to the program. He now works for Perfect Play Athletics creating camp and club opportunities for kids throughout Southern California. He is a welcome addition to the coaching staff.

Frank Wicks – Frosh-Soph Head Coach

Frank Wicks returns for his fifth season as the Fosh-Soph Head Coach. A former baseball and football teammate of head football coach Don Morrow at Aviation High School, coach Wicks also serves as offensive coordinator for the Mustang freshman football team. This is Frank’s eighth season of MCHS Baseball after serving as an assistant coach alongside his brother Tom.

Wicks graduated Cal State University Long Beach with a teaching degree and has spent his entire life in the South Bay. He and wife Cyndi have a son and two daughters.

Scott Peake – Frosh-Soph Assistant Coach

Scott Peake returns to the Frosh-Soph squad for his fifth season.  He lives each day with a positive attitude and hopes to instill the same within his players.

Peake starred at Aviation High School between 1976 to 1979, earning MVP honors and All-Ocean League, as well as honorable mention All-CIF as a shortstop. When he’s not coaching, Scott is an electrical sales engineer with more than 30 years of experience. He holds a degree in business marketing from USC.

Coach Angeleri

Coach Angeleri starts his 15th season for Mira Costa Baseball. He also coaches Mira Costa Football. Coach Angeleri enjoys watching the development of the Frosh / Soph players throughout the season.

Coach Angeleri enjoys being married for 35 years to his wife Lori and spending time at the beach in their off time. They have a grandson who Angeleri hopes to coach in the near future.

Coach Stretch

Mira Costa Baseball is lucky to have Coach Stretch who helps players with the all too often overlooked mental aspects of the game. Stretch, as the kids call him, is a sports performance coach and train psychotherapist. He works with the other coaches and players on team building and counsels players to help them deal with the pressure of performance. His approach includes team talks on mental preparation and individual, on-field counseling. His encourages the kids to have a process: “One pitch, one play, one point,” instead of focusing on the entire outcome of a game or season.

A talented football and baseball player at Esperanza High School in orange county, Stretch played baseball at UC Davis and professionally in independent league ball. After graduating from UC Davis with a degree in political science, he pursued a masters degree in social work. He also works with the cross country and volleyball programs and has a local practice helping athletes in the South Bay.

Austin Chavira

Austin Chavira joins Andre for the Junior Varsity team as an Assistant Coach. Austin started in center field for the Mustangs his sophomore year and after a successful high school career went on to play two years at Los Angeles Harbor College under Keith Ramsey. Austin suffered back-to-back season ending shoulder injuries and decided to end his baseball career in 2012. From there, he got accepted into the University of Southern California where he is majoring in Urban Planning at the Price School of Public Policy. In addition to being an Assistant JV Coach, he also is the Head Coach of the Mira Costa 8th Grade Development Team.

“As long as I don’t have a mortgage and kids of my own, I hope to be coaching baseball as long as possible. It feels great to give back to the community and influence the next generation of young athletes.”

Austin will help with the outfielders as part of his role as Junior Varsity Assistant Coach.

Isaac Friesen

Isaac has spent his whole life either on or in close proximity to a baseball diamond. However those fields have rarely been close to home. Growing up and playing his prep career near Boulder, Colorado, his summer teams traveled across the USA.

Upon finishing high school with All-State honors as a pitcher, Isaac pursued the opportunity to play college baseball at Seminole State College in Oklahoma where he was honored as an Academic All-American at Seminole. During the summer of 2015, Isaac played with the Alameda Merchants in the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League. In his 24 innings pitched, he recorded 7 saves, 20 strikeouts and finished with an ERA of 1.12. He earned a scholarship to play at the University of Hawaii at Manoa to continue his career as a college pitcher. At Hawaii, Isaac met his wife, Heather Boyan, who is currently pursuing a career in professional beach volleyball.

Isaac offers his pitching expertise as the Varsity and JV pitching coordinator. He hopes to continue to impact the next generation of Mustangs and instill in them the tools and skills necessary to grow as a men of character and hard working baseball players.
